Sounds Like San Diego: July 6

Singer/songwriter Joe Pug returns to San Diego for a Casbah show on Wednesday

For most people, it's a short work week, but that doesn't mean we can't already have our eyes pointed firmly on the weekend. Fortunately, we don't have to wait for the good times to roll in as we've got some fun hump-day options. Of course, Selena Gomez is at Valley View Casino Center, and of the current wave of pop stars, I have to say she impresses me the most and I'm sure it will be a multi-costume, massively lit, special effects-laden, bubble-gum sweet affair. Meanwhile, around town, Tarrus Riley plays at the Music Box, and Lyrics Born are at the Belly Up, but my sights are on crooner Joe Pug, who's a little bit country, a little bit rock & roll -- and one of the most earnest, heart-on -his-sleeve singer/songwriters around. If you're looking for stomething free and all-ages, Gilbert Castellanos' jazz jams at Panama 66 have turned into quite a Wednesday night "it" spot, or head to North Park where a new record shop, Normal Records, has sprung up across the street from the Vons to make up for what was left behind after Off the Record shut down. Dominicus Gambinus and Nothingful play a free show on Wednesday to break the spot in.
