Garage 2 Gory: Halloween Showdown

Gloomsday and Love & the Skull are competing to play our frightfully free SoundDiego LIVE Halloween party Oct. 31 at the Office!

Halloween is right around the corner, and that means everyone is ready for a scary-good time. We've got you covered -- our free SoundDiego LIVE party on Oct. 31 at the Office will have you screaming.

In case you haven't heard, the event will feature the Donkeys and the Frights, plus a hosted VIP happy hour sponsored by Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey and, for one lucky winner, a free guitar. If all that wasn't enough for you trick-or-treaters, our regulars know no SoundDiego LIVE event is complete without our, er, Garage 2 Gory competition.

VOTE NOW: Pick your favorite band for Garage 2 Glory

For the uninitiated, Garage 2 Glory pits two bands against each other in an online musical death match. SoundDiego fans vote for their favorite, and the victor plays at SoundDiego LIVE. This month, the battling bands are Gloomsday and Love & the Skull, and both couldn't be more perfect for our killer party.

Gloomsday is a delightfully head-banging tour de force consisting of just a drummer and a guitarist/singer playing a baritone guitar. That means the riffs are dark, heavy and full of raw, unbridled energy. The band's 2013 album, Paradise Tossed, is one quick post-punk gem after another.

"The sound is huge for just a two-piece, a wall of sound in your face!" raved SoundDiego LIVE host Tim Pyles of FM 94/9 and The Local Pyle.

Gloomsday face some stiff competition, however, from Love & the Skull, a Tijuana-based quartet with a penchant for melodic shoegaze, mod and New Wave. The band has been riding quite a buzz since the August 2013 release of their debut album, It's In Your Mind. Don't let their hometown fool you: Their mix of the Smiths and the Kinks influences might just blow your cabeza.

"Their sound is reminiscent of mid- to late-80's American radio, but that isn't the complete sound -- it's much more than that," Pyles noted. "That's just an element of their pop rock sound, and, yes, they sing in english, it's not rock en espanol.

Two enter but only one shall emerge victorious. To vote for this month's Garage 2 Gory band, click here. The winner will be decided Oct. 29 at noon, and you can vote once a day until the contest ends.

We'll be thrilled to have either band on the bill, but either way, you will not want to miss the Oct. 31 SoundDiego LIVE Halloween spooktacular at the Office. Make sure you RSVP for the party here.
