All Play and No Work on Labor Day Weekend

Robin Roth highlights the must-see shows around the county, including Reggae Fest at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club.

Labor Day weekend is upon us so plenty of fun events to check out.

On Friday, SoundDiego LIVE takes over Bar Pink with local bands Barbarian, Buddy Banter and Garage to Glory winner Grizzly Business. I’ll be hosting the festivities. The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club will be sizzling with Steve Aoki and it’s free with your track admission; Awesome Fest kicks off a 3-day event in San Diego; Beehive & the Barracudas play at the Whistle Stop; and Shake Before us are having their Record Release party at the Casbah with the New Kinetics, Schitzophonics and Stereotypes. Plus, get your dance on as Vice brings the heat to Bassmnt and Burns takes over Bang Bang.

Saturday, The Summer Nationals Tour hits Sleep Train Amphitheatre with Offspring, Bad Religion, Pennywise and Stiff Little Fingers; Jack Johnson with Bahamas! play at the RIMAC Arena; Strangelove (Depeche Mode tribute) and Sin (Nine Inch Nails tribute) are at House of Blues; Saint Shameless, Javier Escovedo & the City Lights and Tomten take over the Tin Can; The Downs Family, Duping the Public and Hobo Torch play at the Ken Club; The Frights headline at SOMA; and Queen Nation with Space Oddity – David Brighton’s Tribute to David Bowie are at the Belly Up. On the dance tip, join me for Naughty School Girl Night at Numbers as Club Sabbat takes over both rooms. I’ll be DJing in the front room with Liquid Grey and Drew Harlander keeps it old school in the back room. Other dance options include Designer Drugs at Spin; Stafford Brothers at Bassmnt and Booty Bassment at the Whistle Stop.

Intervention at the Hard Rock Hotel has an action-packed weekend in store for you, with Carnage on Saturday and Chuckie on Sunday. Another huge event in San Diego on both days is LED's Tramps Like Us festival at Valley View Casino Center, which this year features UZ, Anna Lunoe, Brazzabelle, Borgore, Chuckie, Danny Avila, Dirty South and others. Elsewhere on Sunday, Reggae Fest featuring Ziggy Marley is at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club; the show is free with your track admission. Plus, the event everyone has been talking about: Drive Like Jehu are playing a free show at the Spreckles Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park featuring organist Carol Williams. You can get more details here.

Have a great holiday weekend and I’ll see you on the dance floor!
