Light rain fell in San Diego County overnight, signaling the start of a brief but significant change in the weather, according to the National Weather Service.
After clear and unseasonably warm weather earlier in the week, NWS forecasters said all of Southern California will see a significant change through Saturday morning.
The first of two Pacific storms expected in the region struck overnight and was expected to linger into daytime hours, with a 30 percent chance of rain, according to the Weather Service.
Forecasters said there will be a break from the wet weather on Thursday. Then, the second storm is expected to arrive in the region Friday, with the potential to bring a greater amount of rain and mountain snow than Wednesday's storm system.
In the mountains, the snow level Wednesday was at 5,000 feet.
Strong winds with gusts up to 45 miles per hour were also in Wednesday's forecast for the mountains and deserts, where a wind advisory will be in effect until 10 p.m.
