For those who have a passion to dance -- but don't want to pay for expensive classes -- ever consider your local community college?
MiraCosta College in Oceanside is hosting the popular Day of Dance on Saturday with a full program of classes to give an opportunity to everyone -- from aspiring dancers with two left feet to natural hoofers who'd like to try something new.
Launched five years to showcase the college's broad offering of dance classes, the program has turned into a popular community draw, with as many as 80 people showing up each year to fill the morning and afternoon classes.
This year's program, which runs from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at MiraCosta's main campus in Oceanside, will feature instructions on the hour in modern, Latin, hip-hop, swing, ballroom, tap dancing and even Pilates, among other offerings. Students will be asked to sign a release form and arrive in soft-soled shoes and comfortable clothes. The minimum age to participate is 11.
The most popular classes each year, according to organizer Dave Massey, are the ballroom/Latin and hip-hop classes. This year, to accommodate the crowd and different experience levels, Massey said he will be splitting the hip-hop classes into beginning and intermediate levels.
Massey said the program's highlight is the high-caliber teachers that he brings in each year to run the dance workshops.
Joining Day of Dance this year are guest instructors Tim Stevenson and Paul Cloud.
Stevenson is a well-known celebrity choreographer who has worked with performers including Jennifer Lopez, Jo Dee Messina, Chris Rock, Ty Herndon, Destiny's Child, Stacie Oricco and more.

Stevenson is a well-known celebrity choreographer who has worked with performers including Jennifer Lopez, Jo Dee Messina, Chris Rock, Ty Herndon, Destiny's Child, Stacie Oricco and more.
He also has set dance routines for the LA Clipper Girls, Portland Trailblazer Girls, Sacramento Kings Girls and Memphis Grizzlies, and he is a national titleholder in high school USA Nationals. His own dancing career included performing onstage, in concert and on television and in music videos for Lopez, Boys II Men, Usher, Brandy, TLC, Jennifer Love Hewitt and many more.
