Hotel Bibles Swapped for "Fifty Shades of Grey"

British hotel removes Gideon Bibles from its rooms

"Fifty Shades of Grey" is replacing the Bible in one British hotel.

The Good Book is out and a steamy bestseller in at one British hotel.

Guests at the Damson Dene Hotel in England's Lake District will find "Fifty Shades of Grey" at their bedsides rather than the traditional Gideon Bible.

"Tonight millions of women will be curling up in bed with a good book and you can bet your life it won't be the Bible. More likely than not it will be 'Fifty Shades of Grey,'” hotel owner Jonathan Denby told NBC News.

The substitution has reportedly been in the works for a while, with Denby considering several options before settling on E.L. James' erotic novel. A local vicar took issue with the hotel's recent changes, telling British media it’s just a gimmick. Criticism is also coming from the U.S. as well.

"We've had quite a few e-mails quoting the scriptures to us and suggesting that it would be a good thing to put the Bible back," Denby told NBC News.

Denby is not completely ditching the Bible. He will keep copies at the front desk “if any guest whose preferred bedtime reading happens to be the Bible [and they find] that they have forgotten to pack their copy.”
