Axelrod in Running for Mustache of the Year

For love of 'stache and prizes.

David Axelrod, President Obama's senior adviser and local Chicago boy done good, is in the running for the American Mustache Institute's mustache of the year.

The annual "Robert Goulet Memorial Mustached American of the Year" contest, which opened for voting Monday, recognizes the person best contributing to the Mustached Way of life over the last year.

The winner will be recognized on Oct. 30th at 'Stache Bash 2009 which, awesomely, features the mustacherly harmonizing of one John Oates.

Robert Goulet was a Canadian-American Grammy- and Tony Award-winning actor known for portraying Lancelot in the Broadway musical Camelot. He also rocked a killer nose broom.

In vying for the Goulet, Axelrod's going up against a rogue's gallery of lip hamstered men, including Murray City, Utah mayor Dan Snarr, rocking a nearly shoulder-wide handlebar, and Attorney General Eric Holder, whose deep black mouth eyebrow belies the grey of his close-shorn locks.

Also in the running is U.S. Airways pilot Chesley Burnett "Sully" Sullenberger III, who landed Flight 1549 safely in the Hudson this year; St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Brendan Ryan; and several everyday joes like Michael Allen, who's enormous hair gerbil looks not unlike a hairy scythe.

Voting ends Oct. 20th. Vote early. Vote often.

Vote Axelrod.
