Gulls' Welinski Earns All-Star Nod

San Diego defenseman makes 1st AHL All-Star team

Only three defensemen from the American Hockey League's entire Pacific Division can play in the AHL All-Star Game. One of them calls San Diego home.

Gulls defenseman Andy Welinski was named to the 2018 AHL All-Star team on Monday. Sandwiched around a 4-game call-up by the Anaheim Ducks, Welinski has scored 21 points (six goals, 15 assists) in 24 games for San Diego.

Welinski has been one of the most dangerous players in the league with a man advantage. He's tied for second in the entire AHL in power play points with 17 (five goals, 12 assists). The Gulls have now had an all-star defenseman every year since joining the AHL. Brandon Montour earned the honor in 2015 and 2016.

The AHL All-Star festivities start in Utica, NY, with a skills competition on Sunday, January 28. The All-Star Classic is set for the next day.
