Aztecs Defense Comes Up Huge in Colorado

SDSU forces 4 turnovers, 3 on interceptions by Luq Barcoo, in lopsided win

The Aztecs had a bye week to get ready for a Colorado State team that was averaging 32.4 points per game on offense. If you give a good defensive coach like Rocky Long extra time to get a talented defense like San Diego State has ready you're going to have trouble moving the football.

It also helps to have Luq Barcoo on the field.

The senior defensive back had three interceptions ... ON THREE CONSECUTIVE SNAPS ... in a 24-10 Aztecs win over the Rams in Fort Collins. SDSU also recovered a fumble to give themselves a four turnover night.

Barcoo's big night started in the 3rd quarter when Patrick O'Brien underthrew his receiver and Luq was in good position to make the pick. The Rams decided to switch QB's and bring in Justice McCoy.

On his first pass Barcoo made a nice drive on the ball to jump the pattern and make his 2nd interception in two plays. That one led to a 3-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Agnew to Juwan Washington that put the Aztecs up 24-3. Agnew threw three touchdown passes, the other two going to wideout Kobe Smith, and SDSU didn't turn the ball over.

When CSU got the ball back McCoy tried to go deep and Barcoo was there to steal his 3rd pick of the night. If that's ever happened before I could not find record of it. Any way you slice it this was a night the former Castle Park High School and Grossmont College star will never forget.

The Aztecs improve to 4-1 on the year and 1-1 in the Mountain West Conference. They're back at home on Saturday, October 12 against Wyoming with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff at SDCCU Stadium.
