Another Padre Gets All-Star Nod

San Diego Padres closer Heath Bell will replace Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Yovani Gallardo in the All-Star game.

Gallardo was put on the 15-day disabled list this week with a left oblique strain. NL All-Star manager Charlie Manuel chose Bell since he had also chosen Gallardo. Bell

This is the second straight All-Star selection for Bell, who was the loser in last year's game. He is tied for the NL lead with 23 saves. He is 4-0 with a 1.72 ERA.

"Bell ... didn't appear to have much of a shot at appearing in the July 13 game in Anaheim," reported MLB.com. "On Wednesday, the latest round of voting totals had him fifth out of five Final Vote candidates.... [however,] National League manager Charlie Manuel made the selection."

Local critics have pointed out the lack of Padres pitching (tops in the Major Leagues) on the National League roster.

The only other Padre on this year's team is first baseman Adrian Gonzalez.

This years' game will be played in Anaheim.
