Two Southern California officers from the El Monte Police Department rescued a dog stuck in a car engine Monday.

Officer Aldair Figueroa was driving on Magnolia Street near Mountain View Road when he was flagged down by a woman who appeared to be "distraught," according to a written statement.

The woman told the officer that her dog, Cookie, had escaped from the yard and run into the street, somehow wedging himself between the hot exhaust headers and the firewall of a vehicle, police said.

Figueroa, along with help from Officer James Singleterry, worked for 25 minutes to free the dog.

Cookie suffered a minor cut to her lip and was reunited with her grateful owner, police said.

Cookie, Singleterry and the dog's owner posed for a selfie to celebrate the heroic rescue.
