Miramar Police are investigating after the bodies of a grandmother and her four-year-old granddaughter were discovered floating in a lake late Sunday night.
The discovery was made in a lake in the Silver Shores gated community in the 2200 block of Southwest 164th Avenue in Miramar.
βSomeone noticed an object in the water. Several individuals went into the lake and pulled the grandmother out,β said Tania Rues of Miramar Police.
According to police and family members, the grandmother, 59-year-old Laura Fleming, and her granddaughter, 4-year-old Leila Fleming, were reported missing after they had gone to feed the ducks in the lake.
Family members said neither the grandmother nor child could swim. A cousin of Leilaβs named Lourdes described her cousin to NBC 6 saying, βShe was adorable. She was a little shy, but when you broke her shell, she was an adorable little girl.β
While police continue to investigate, they donβt believe the drowning was the result of any criminal activity.
βAt the present time, no foul play is suspected,β said Rues. βWe believe this is a tragic accident.β
