A water contact closure issued Thursday for the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge and Imperial Beach now includes the Silver Strand and Coronado shorelines.
The County of San Diego Department of Environmental Health extended the existing closure Friday after observing northward currents moving sewage-contaminated runoff entering the Tijuana Estuary up the coast.
The sewage-contaminated runoff is originating in the Tijuana River, according to the department.
Posted signs warning of sewage contamination will remain until water is tested and deemed safe for recreational use.
