Debris Fire Causes Propane Tank Explosions at Otay Mesa Junkyard

A vehicle fire reported at a junkyard in Otay mesa Monday turned out to be a debris pile that went up in flames and caused propane tanks nearby to explode, a San Diego Fire-Rescue Department spokesperson said.

San Diego police said the fire started with an unoccupied van at a junkyard at 1222 Innovative Dr. just before 4 p.m.

A SDFD spokesperson said firefighters arrived and discovered it was actually a debris pile that was burning, not a van.

SDPD said the fire caused multiple propane tanks mounted on nearby forklifts to explode.

No injuries were reported and no structures were threatened, SDFD said.
