New designs for local shopping hub Horton Plaza will be introduced at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the mall above the store Sam Goody.
Three plans were proposed and critiqued by the public before the current plan for the project.
The plan calls for Westfield, which owns the mall, to tear down the old department store which currently houses Sam Goody, Abercrombie & Fitch and a space used by events such as THREAD.
The latest design concept features an open space with water fountains, seating areas and large light fixtures. The park will be built where the soon-to-be-demolished Robinsons-May building currently sits at 4th and Broadway, across the street from the NBC building downtown.
The new Horton Plaza will be approximately the size of an entire downtown city block. More than 200 events are planned to be held on the space every year.
Centre City Development Corporation, working on behalf of the City of San Diego’s Redevelopment Agency, and Westfield Horton Plaza worked together to develop the plans. Westfield will maintain, manage and program the historic park and new plaza for 25 years.
