Pedestrian Hit, Killed by Box Truck in Lakeside While Crossing I-8

A 80-year-old pedestrian was hit and killed by a box truck in Lakeside while crossing the Interstate on foot, California Highway Patrol (CHP) officials said.

The collision happened Monday afternoon past 4 p.m. near westbound Interstate 8 at Lake Jennings Park Road, officers said.

The woman, from El Centro, was driving a compact Ford when it stalled and she pulled to the side, the CHP said. She got out of her car and was struck as she crossed I-8 on foot.

Officers said the car in front of the box truck swerved to miss her. The driver in the box truck slamed on the brakes, but could not stop in time, officers said.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead on scene. The driver, in his 20s, stayed on scene but was not cited for the crash; he was released.

The details of the crash are under investigation.

The left lane is closed as officials investigate.

The victim's identity will be released once next-of-kin is notified.

No other information was immediately available.
