As non-essential businesses temporarily shutter during the coronavirus pandemic in San Diego County and beyond, several grocery store chains are looking to fill dozens of positions to keep up with growing demands.

San Diego-based Jimbo's, Ralphs, Sprouts and Vons are seeking to fill numerous positions immediately to help with the influx of shoppers amid the pandemic.

Jimbo’s is looking to hire a combined 60 to 75 news employees at its five locations across the county: 4S Ranch; Carlsbad; Carmel Valley; Escondido; and Horton Plaza in downtown San Diego.

Jimbo's also told NBC 7, retroactive to March 9, all hourly staff will receive a $.50 pay raise; except for those paid less than $14.50 an hour, their pay will be set at $15 an hour. In addition, the quarterly bonus for the 1st quarter will receive an automatic bump of 50%, meaning if a worker was going to get $100 they will now get $150.

The positions include food service, meat and produce clerks, stockers, cashiers, and baggers. Applications are being accepted via Jimbo’s website; the positions are being filled immediately, the company said Tuesday.

“As a result of recent announcements and guidance from the  County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency, we acknowledge our customers will continue to have increased needs during this difficult time and we want to be able to provide for them,” said Jim “Jimbo” Someck, founder of Jimbo’s in a press release. “Health is one of the most important values we live and work by at Jimbo’s and we will continue to adhere to all of the recommended guidelines.”

Jimbo’s was founded by Someck in 1984 and is known for its organic and natural foods, and its ongoing support of local, organic farms, and San Diego brands.

Also hiring immediately amid the novel coronavirus pandemic is Ralphs. The grocery chain said it is seeking to fill 10,000 spots nationwide, with more than 40 positions in San Diego County.

Such positions that are available around the county include retail clerks, coffee clerks, intern pharmacists and more.

Grocery chain Vons also said it is looking to hire immediately. Prospective applicants are encouraged to apply online or at your local store. Its cake, food and grocery departments are currently accepting applications. Click here for details.
