Fire Burning Off I-15 Near Lake Hodges Comes Within Feet of Retirement Community

Firefighters knocked down a fire that sparked off Interstate 15 near Lake Hodges just before it reached a nearby retirement community.

The fire sparked at around 4:30 p.m. on the west side of I-15 south of West Bernardo Drive and came within feet of the Casas de las Campanas development.

Some residents of the community were briefly evacuated.

A San Diego Fire Department (SDFD) helicopter and San Diego Gas & Electric's Aircrane helitanker both made water drops using water from nearby Lake Hodges.

Ramps to and from West Bernardo Drive were shut down and didn't reopen until close to 11 p.m.

Ten acres burned.
