Deported Former Marine Becomes a Citizen

American Civil Liberties Union says Daniel Torres case is not rare.

A United States Marine veteran is now a citizen of the U.S.

Daniel Torres was an undocumented former Marine until Thursday afternoon when he was sworn in as a citizen in San Diego.

However, Torres’s journey to citizenship was a long time coming.

After serving in Iraq and being honorably discharged, Torres was not able to return to his home in the U.S. for some time due to immigration restrictions. He subsequently moved to Tijuana, where the Deported Veterans Support House assists veterans like Torres.

American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of California reports Torres is not the only case of a veteran being deported. ACLU is currently aware of 70 cases of deported veterans around the world.

ACLU and the Deported Veteran Support House have recently joined forces to continue supporting veterans until they can receive citizenship.
