Cal State San Marcos students and faculty members protested significant cuts in state funding for higher education during an on-campus rally Thursday.
Chants of "We're fired up; can't take it anymore" rang out during the midday rally that Students Advancing Via Education CSUSM held in a large, open-air plaza in front of Kellogg Library.
More commonly known as SAVE CSUSM, the group formed in September to lobby Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and state legislators to reverse $564 million worth of cuts to the CSU system's budget for the fiscal year that began July 1.
The governor and legislators said the cuts were necessary to help close the state's $26 billion budget deficit.
As a result, the San Marcos university saw the amount of money it receives from the state drop by $14 million, or about 20 percent, for the year.
