Air Fare Wars Taking Flight

In the mood for a weekend getaway?  Southwest Airlines is targeting travelers with some low-priced ticket prices.

The latest air fare war is being sparked by the emergence of upstart Virgin America servicing Orange County.  On Tuesday, the airline announced it would service John Wayne Airport and San Francisco in late April with an introductory one-way ticket fare of $59.  Southwest -- which will begin servicing the OC in May -- responded by offering $49 fares.

Virgin America and Southwest have battled at Los Angeles International Airport, leading to lower fares there, and lured customers away from other airlines, according to a report in the LA Times.

In San Diego, travelers can take advantage of some cheap fares on Southwest.  A Valentine's Day weekend flight for two to Denver is up for grabs for $59 each way.  And a special web fare will get you a flight to Las Vegas from San Diego for $62 per person.
