San Diego voters have elected Democrat Mara Elliott for San Diego City Attorney.
Chief Deputy City Attorney Mara Elliott campaigned for office along with Republican candidate Deputy District Attorney Robert Hickey.
With 100 percent of voters counted, the San Diego Registrar's office says Elliott won with 57 percent of the vote.
Elliott worked in the San Diego City Attorney’s Office for 20 years. She said she wants to protect all San Diegans, whether it’s against elder and child abuse or domestic violence.
She is the first female City Attorney in San Diego.
"This is a glass ceiling pen. It was created by a friend of my grandmothers to commemorate Diane Feinstein, Barbara Boxer and some of the women who achieved political success in the early nineties," Elliott told NBC 7.
"My grandmother gave it to me with the hope that someday I'd break the glass ceiling," said Elliott. "I thought that today was the best day to wear it because I miss her very much and she would have been so proud to be here today."
Current City Attorney Jan Goldsmith could not run because of term limits.
The City Attorney’s office prosecutes misdemeanors, provides legal advice to city officials and defends the city in civil cases.
