UCSD Student Escapes Attempted Kidnapping: Police

An unknown man attempted to kidnap a University of California San Diego student on campus Friday evening when he approached her from behind, placed a paper bag over her head and tried to drag her off a pathway, UCSD police said.

Students and faculty were told to "be on alert" in an emergency email and text message sent shortly after the incident, which occurred about 8 p.m. just west of the La Jolla campus's Geisel Library.

The victim reportedly pulled free from the assailant and fled from the scene. The suspect then fled on foot.

The UCSD Triton Alert System sent subscribers the following message:

UCSD Police are investigating a attempted kidnapping that occurred on 5/20 at 800 pm just west of Geisel library. Suspect light skinned male dark curly hair 5’8” medium build wearing jeans. Fled on foot. Be on alert.

A student reported receiving the alert email at 10:41 p.m.
