Kidnapped Teen Escapes at Gas Station

Authorities say a 16-year-old girl kidnapped from the city of San Bernardino has escaped from her captor and called 911 from a San Diego County gas station.

San Diego County Sheriff's Sgt. Brian McCauley said Sunday the victim got into a car earlier in the morning with a 30-year-old family friend who promised to take her to a store.

Ignoring the girl's protests, the man drove her about 60 miles south to a filling station on Highway 76 near I-15, where she escaped as he bought snacks.

The girl called authorities at about 9:20 a.m. as the suspect fled southbound in a white compact vehicle with tinted windows, a cracked windshield and chrome wheels.

McCauley refused to identify the suspect, but said he has connections in San Diego.
