Reagan and strike group ending 6-month deployment

A six-month deployment of the aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan and five ships in its strike group will come to an end, just in time for Thanksgiving, the Navy announced Friday.

The Reagan along with the guided-missile cruiser Chancellorsville, guided-missile frigate Thach and guided-missile destroyers Decatur, Gridley and Howard, will arrive back in San Diego on Tuesday, according to the Navy's Third Fleet.

During their deployment, the 5,500 sailors assigned to the strike group performed combat operations in support of troops in Afghanistan and provided humanitarian aid following a typhoon that struck the Philippines.

The Reagan is the nation's ninth and newest Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft and is named after the 40th President of the United States.
