A Loma Portal neighborhood was awakened Wednesday when a hit and run driver caused a gas leak.
Police say a car struck and sheared off a gas line meter in the 3200 block of Elliot Street.
The car left the scene leaving the pipe leaking natural gas into the area.
Firefighters went door to door to evacuate eight houses on each side of the street.
The San Diego Fire department was able to shut off the gas line and San Diego Gas & Electric crews arrived to replace the meter that was destroyed in the crash.
