Former Racing Champ on Trial

A former power boat racing champion is on trial in El Cajon for allegedly trying to burn down the homes of his stepdaughter and ex-wife while they were inside.

Eugene "Mickey" Remund, who drove Miss Budweiser, PAY n PAK and other hydroplanes in the 1970s and '80s, faces six charges, including premeditated attempted murder and arson.

Deputy District Attorney Chantal De Maurigne said yesterday in her opening statement that the 76-year-old's attempt to light his ex-wife's garage on fire in June 22 was a "murder-suicide gone bad." Remund is accused of trying to burn his stepdaughter's home on the same day and shooting himself with a nail gun afterward.

His attorney, Brad Patton, says his client did not intend to harm anyone.
