People working at the shelter told the San Diego Union-Tribune that the amount of pets being left at the care facility has increased to record levels during the past year. A pair of "foreclosure cats" --Circe and Ville -- were turned over the shelter just last week, the paper reported.

"The owners came in and said they can no longer keep them because they lost their house and where they are going, they don't accept pets," veterinary technician Arlene Martinez told the paper.

Typically, there are 350-420 animals at the shelter, but its population has swelled to as high as 560 in October. The glut of pets is putting a serious strain on the shelter's resources, the paper reported.
