Fire Brings I-5 to Crawl

A brush fire near the Gilman Drive exit of Interstate 5 has brought traffic to a standstill as multiple lanes were closed down on Wednesday afternoon.

The fire, which was in the center meridian, was out by 5:45 p.m., but southbound traffic was backed up all the way to the merge/split at Interstate 805. Traffic on northbound I-5 was also affected. At 5:45 p.m. a CHP officer could be seen escorting traffic -- very slowly -- up the freeway after all lanes had been closed.

Ten minutes later, most lanes had re-opened to traffic, but the damage was done, and commuter were looking at long delays getting home.

It's not yet know what caused the fire.
