Busted Motor Leaves Window Washers Hanging

Workers rescued by hook-and-ladder truck

A pair of window washers had some terrifying moments Tuesday when the scaffolding they were on malfunctioned, leaving them hanging 10 stories up.

The incident occurred at about 7:40 a.m. at an office building in the 11950 block of El Camino Real near Valley Center Drive. One of the motors in control of the cables supporting the scaffolding did not stop, leaving the scaffolding horribly lopsided. Cal San Diego Fire Rescue sent a hook-and-ladder truck and crew out soon after getting a 911 call.

One of the workers managed to stay on the scaffolding, but the other dangled dozens of feet up from a safety rope. Copter 2 was unable to assist in the rescue because of heavy fog, officials said.

The hook-and-ladder was able to extend its ladder to the workers, plucking them to safety. Neither worker was injured, authorities said..
