City Sprinklers Left on During Rainstorms Spark Outrage

The failure of Escondido officials to switch off some city sprinklers during recent rainstorms has damaged the credibility of a new city campaign urging residents to prioritize water conservation because of the state drought, our media partner the North County Times reported.

"It's hypocritical for the city to be so harsh with their enforcement on residents and businesses, and then not lead by example," said Lisa Prazeau, a north Escondido resident who has criticized city policies adopted last fall that would outlaw backyard fountains and limit landscape irrigation to two days a week if the drought worsens.

City maintenance officials blamed recent incidents, which took place in Washington Park and the medians of Centre City Parkway, on isolated malfunctions that they characterized as nearly impossible to avoid.
