Carlsbad Victims' Son Has Criminal Past

The man police are calling a "person of interest" in the investigation of the death of an elderly Carlsbad couple has a history of mental illness and violent behavior.

Dennis Gluck is the son Harry and Jean Gluck. Mr. and Mrs. Gluck were found dead Sunday afternoon, inside their home on the 2700 block of Chestnut Avenue. An autopsy revealed "chop"-like wounds on Harry Gluck's head and neck, and similar wounds on Jean Gluck's head and neck.

Carlsbad police are now looking for the couple's 44-year-old son, Dennis. Court records reveal that Dennis Brian Gluck was arrested in June, 2000 on a felony charge of Exhibiting a Deadly Weapon. He allegedly used a machete to threaten a victim. Gluck was also charged with a hate crime, because prosecutors claimed Gluck was violating the civil rights of the alleged victim, Ladarrios Davis, due to Davis's "color, race, religion..."

Gluck pleaded guilty to a reduced charge, and served time in county jail. He was also placed on probation, and ordered to "take all medications as ordered by doctor" as well as participating in therapy as ordered by his probation officer. But court records show Dennis Gluck twice violated his probation. He failed to take his medications as ordered by the court, and also failed to report to his probation officer.

Court records also show Gluck was a "transient," and he was at one time ordered to take his medications by injection instead of orally.

In one of his last court appearances in September 2001, Gluck was ordered to see a psychatrist about his medications.

Gluck is  5 feet 8 inches tall, weighs 150 pounds, and has short-cropped brown hair and blue eyes. He may be driving a light tan '96 Toyota Camry with the California license plate 3TCD495.

"It doesn't necessarily mean he's involved in the crime, but he's someone who we want to interview and find out if he does know anything or maybe connected," Sgt. Gil Beason said.

Jean Gluck, 77, attended St. Patrick's Catholic Church and was a very active member there. She used to volunteer at the afternoon daycare at the school next door.

Harry Gluck, 90, was chairman of the California Public Employment Relations Board from 1978 to 1984.
