A 64-year-old Caltrans worker has died after being hit by a trolley in National City, according to police.
Stephen Palmer Sr., 64, who was on-duty at the time, was hit just before 1 p.m. Wednesday by a southbound train north of the 24th Street stop, according to National City police.
Palmer tried to jump out of the way after the trolley driver honked and put on his brakes, the driver told police.
Palmer suffered a major head injury. He died at a UCSD Medical Center.
It was not clear what he was doing on the tracks.
βWe are still sifting through the details of what took place, and dealing with the shock of suddenly losing a member of our Caltrans Family,β said Caltrans District Director Laurie Berman. βOur hearts are with Stephenβs family and friends and the employees who worked with him. It is such a tragic loss.β
Palmer had worked for Caltrans for four years. He is survived by his wife, Bertha, and son, Stephen Jr.
