CBP Frees Mother, Daughter Trapped in Convertible Compartment at Otay Mesa Port of Entry

Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers rescued a mother and daughter trapped in a compartment in a convertible Tuesday at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry.

According to CBP, a 27-year-old U.S citizen entered the port in a Nissan 350Z when a detector dog first alerted officers to the area where the car’s retractable roof is stored.

Upon further inspection they found what appeared to be two people concealed in the convertible compartment but could not open it using the car’s electronic opener, nor could they remove the hinges of the compartment due to safety concerns for the two women inside.

About 30 minutes after the convertible arrived at the inspection area, CBP officers and San Diego Fire-Rescue personnel were able to free the 30-year-old woman and her 10-year-old daughter. Neither were injured.

The driver was arrested and booked into the downtown jail.
