4 Injured in Temecula Hot Air Balloon Crash

Four people were injured when a hot air balloon caught fire Saturday morning in Temecula.

The balloon was carrying five people over Temecula Wine Country when the incident happened, according to a witness.

The balloon landed near vineyards at Vino Way and Calle Cabernet around 7:44 a.m., Riverside County Fire Department officials said.

Early reports suggested that the balloon exploded in mid-air, but officials clarified that the balloon landed uneventfully and then a small explosion occurred. It’s unclear what caused the fire.

One of the passengers was taken to a burn center, two were taken to a trauma center and one was taken to a hospital. The fifth passenger was not injured.

The Federal Aviation Agency and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.
