1 Dies in Collision on Westbound I-8 at Waring Road

One person died and two were injured Thursday when a vehicle rolled over in a collision along Interstate 8 at Waring Road.

The CHP said a Toyota Avalon with four passengers inside was speeding on I-8 before it hit another vehicle and lost control at around 1:30 p.m.

The Avalon was approaching slower traffic when it rear-ended a Toyota Prius. It then veered up a hillside that splits east and westbound lanes, hit several trees and rolled back down before coming to rest in the middle of the freeway, CHP said.

A passenger of the Avalon was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, a 20-year-old man, fled the crash and ran into a nearby ravine. He was later found on the westbound Mission Gorge off-ramp and taken into custody, officers said.

The driver faces felony hit-and-run charges.

Two passengers of the Avalon were also hurt, one with major injuries and another with minor injuries.

Four lanes of the freeway were closed due to the collision and were reopened at around 6:30 p.m.

Drugs or alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash, CHP said.
