ID Thieves Strike at the Pump

Buyers beware

Identity thieves are stealing your credit card information every time you fill up with gas.

Scam artists are placing portable "skimming" devices inside gasoline pumps.  They are not visible to the public but download credit and debit card information when you fill up your tank.

Investigators say since the skimmers are wired inside consumers have no idea they are victims until they get their credit card bill.

Gas tanks have common keys, so if crooks can get copies they have access to thousands of pumps. Even station employees have no idea the skimming devices are inside unless they open the tanks and find them.

Some stations are changing the locks and adding security tape to their pumps.

Thieves often choose gas stations along major highways.
