Female Seniors Shoot Hoops at National Tournament

A basketball team of senior women who are all over 50 are dreaming big like their team name, the San Marcos Dreamers, as they embark on their trip to play nationals, according to a report in the North County Times.

"Nothing is impossible, nothing," said 68-year-old team member Donna Benson of University City. "I think a person can do anything they put their mind to -- it won't be perfect, but it makes you feel so good inside."

Benson survived a severe brain injury in 1999 that forced her to relearn how to walk and talk. She met a friend during her rehabilitation who could never play basketball again. Benson learned to play for her friend and grew to love the sport. She now competes in basketball, 200 and 800 meter running races, and racquetball.

Benson is part of the team of Dreamers who will compete in the Senior Games at Stanford University at the end of July. The team practices at Corky Smith Gymnasium and compete in San Diego. Currently, they are seeking volunteer coaches as well as new players. Eventually, they hope to expand the league in North County to include different age groups.
