450K Flock to San Diego Beaches for Holiday Weekend

Our local sandy shorelines were packed as San Diegans and visitors enjoyed the Memorial Day holiday

Did you soak in the sun at one of San Diego’s picturesque beaches over the long weekend? If so, you clearly weren’t the only one.

Turns out, according to San Diego Lifeguards, hundreds of thousands of beachgoers flocked to our local sandy shorelines this Memorial Day Weekend. Over the course of Saturday, Sunday and Monday combined, 450,800 people visited San Diego beaches, with 203,000 beachgoers hitting the beaches on Memorial Day alone.

The large holiday crowds kept local lifeguards busy.

Over the weekend, lifeguards responded to 269 medical aid calls across beaches and performed 187 rescues, according to figures released by officials Tuesday.

By the way, several of San Diego’s beaches made the “honor roll” earlier this month on the 2014 report card of great beaches across the state compiled by Heal the Bay. The report focused on beaches that have excellent water quality all year.

Among those hotspots that made the cut were the Point Loma Lighthouse Beach, St. Malo Beach in Oceanside, Carlsbad Beach at Ponto Drive, Encina Creek Outlet, Carlsbad Beach at Poinsettia Lane, Carlsbad Beach at Cerezo Drive and Windansea Beach in La Jolla.
