One of San Diego hippest neighborhoods is now that much more exciting with the opening of a new restaurant and hangout.
The Asian-influenced eatery, Wang's, will hold a grand opening for its first San Diego location in North Park on Jan. 27, which will coincide with Chinese New Year.
The restaurant offers up a menu featuring various Asian cultures, referred to as Asian – infusion, and also a happy hour. The menu, which is available online, includes plates divided into categories such as sweet, savory and green, among others.
Beyond good eats, Wang's offers a good price as dishes range from $10 to $18.
Wang's first started tantalizing taste buds in Palm Springs where Wang's spokesman, Jeff Gettas, says many of the customers already had ties to San Diego. It seemed like a natural decision to open a location in the city, Gettas added, "North Park is a really exciting and upcoming area and it fit with the niche we were after."
Nestled inside North Park on University Avenue, Wang's houses what used to be a JC Penny's building; but even though some of its postwar architecture remains, much has changed.
“People are really wowed by the space,” Gettas said. “In the end we created a dramatic, yet intimate setting.”
Wang's soft opening started last November and it has seen a good amount of traffic since, Gettas said.
“One of the things we like about the area is the support we get," Gettas said. "Half of the employees live in the North Park area and so there’s a strong community connection.”
For its grand opening on Chinese New Year, Wang's is pulling out all the stops with an all-night happy hour on Friday Jan. 27 featuring an in-house Geisha.
The party will continue on Saturday with a red carpet event boasting live music, performances by the San Diego Lucky Lions Dancers and traditional Chinese New Year foods and drinks.
