Dozens Camp Out for Free Burritos

Freebirds gives first 25 customers free burritos for a year

No, Occupy San Diego hasn’t taken hold of Hillcrest.

The dozens of people who camped out Wednesday night on Fifth Avenue were hoping to win free burritos for a year.

Restaurant chain Freebirds World Burrito opened its first San Diego location at 3958 Fifth Ave. Thursday morning. When the doors opened, the first 25 people in line were given free burritos for 365 days.

Winners received a card that will allow one burrito per day for the next year.

Freebirds is the sixth new restaurant to open in Hillcrest since August, and joins neighboring breakfast eatery Snooze in an attempt to liven up Fifth Avenue with more dining options.

The chain, which has most of its 50+ locations in Texas, has six outlets in California.
