Mr. Bud Black Goes To Washington

Former Padres Skipper to Take Over As Nationals Manager

Bud Black has a new gig in the nation’s capital.

After getting fired by the Padres in June, the Washington Nationals will hire the former San Diego skipper to replace the departed Matt Williams.

Black compiled a 649-713 record (.477 winning percentage) with the Padres over eight-and-a-half seasons.

The Nationals were favorites to win the NL East division and contend for the World Series but didn't even qualify for the playoffs.

Padres general manager AJ Preller let Black go mid-season after the Friars stumbled to a 32-33 record. San Diego wound up finishing a disappointing 74-88 in 2015. That wound up being a worse record than the previous season when the Padres won 77 games in 2014 and trades to shakeup the roster wound up backfiring.

The Padres are still searching for a manager after moving on from interim manager Pat Murphy when the regular season ended.

Former Twins manager Rod Gardenhire and Pirates 3rd base coach Rick Sofield have reportedly interviewed twice with the Padres and currently are the front-runners for the job.
