San Diego Chargers: A Heartbreaking Loss

For three and a half quarters the Chargers outplayed the Texans, but it was an all too familiar finish. Randy Bullock's 41-yard field goal as time expired was the game winner. Houston beat the Chargers 31-28 at Qualcomm in week one's final contest.

The Mike McCoy era started out well enough. On the Texans first play Cam Thomas intercepted Matt Shaub after the ball was tipped by Jarret Johnson . On the very next play Philip Rivers threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Mathews and just like that it was 7-0 Chargers just fifteen seconds into the game.

Eddie Royal caught a pair of touchdown passes, one more than he had ALL last season. Vincent Brown scored late in the second quarter to give the Chargers a 21-7 halftime advantage.

The Texans would not go quietly into the night, though. They came roaring back thanks to a couple of key plays. With the score 28-14 Thomas was called for a penalty on a Texans field goal attempt for unnecessary roughness on long snapper Jon Weeks. After the automatic first down Shaub hit Owen Daniels on a short touchdown pass to cut the Texans deficit to seven.

Houston tied the game in the fourth quarter on a Brian Cushing 18-yard pick-six of Rivers. The Chargers managed just ten fourth quarter plays resulting in no first downs.
