‘I Don't Buy' Trump's Position on Immigration, Tim Kaine Tells Stephen Colbert

It was his first appearance on late night television as the Democratic vice presidential nominee

Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Kaine says GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump's shifting positions on immigration can't be trusted.

Speaking during a Thursday afternoon taping of CBS's "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert," Kaine attacked Trump for wavering on whether immigrants here illegally must be deported.

"I don't buy it," Kaine said, before saying in Spanish that Trump is always fighting against the Latino community.

It was his first appearance on late night television as the Democratic vice presidential nominee.

Trump has previously promised to deport the estimated 11 million people living in the United States illegally. In recent days, he's suggested he might be open to allowing them to stay.

Kaine jumped to Clinton's defense when the late night host brought up Trump's attack on his rival, calling Clinton "a bigot."

"When Hillary Clinton got out of law school, she was working to help advance racial justice in the juvenile justice system in the south, segregation in Alabama," Kaine told Colbert. "And I about that time got out of law school, was battling housing discrimination in the south in Virginia.

"Let me ask an important question," Colbert also told Kaine. "How's her health? Is she okay? Has she stood up on her own power?" he asked, mocking recent questions raised by Trump and his campaign surrogates about Clinton's medical state.

"I think she could beat me in the New York Marathon," Kaine quipped. "But we may not do that because there's a campaign."

A former missionary in Honduras, Kaine frequently peppers his campaign appearances with remarks in Spanish.
