Young San Diegans Spend Night Outdoors to Raise Awareness About Homelessness

More than 300 young San Diegans spent the night outdoors in the middle of a park to help raise awareness about homelessness.

The San Diego Rescue Mission, a faith-based organization, hosted the overnight event at Liberty Station.

“The biggest message about sleepless is about hope,” said CEO Herb Johnson. “That the community cares about the homeless population.”

The Mission provides safe-haven, restorative care and rehabilitation services to the homeless, addicted, abused and poor in San Diego.

“It’s more about awareness,” said Johnson. “It’s not a fundraiser.”

Teens came out around 4 p.m. and spent the afternoon going through interactive booths and watching educational videos. A discussion group was held Sunday morning once everyone woke up.

There are approximately 10,000 homeless people in San Diego.
