Collision Leads Cops Right to Pot

Talk about bum luck.

You pack for a weekend ski trip to Mammoth, lock the doors and check the timer on the pot farm growing inside your home.

Then, before you return, you get a call from police telling you some idiot crashed his truck into your house and now you’re facing charges for growing illegal drugs.

That’s exactly what happened to tenants living inside the home at 4663 Morrell Street in Pacific Beach, according to San Diego police.

When San Diego police officers arrived to the crash scene Sunday afternoon, it appeared to be just a suspected DUI driver who lost control and slammed his truck into a home.

When they went inside the home to check out the damage officers discovered a little more than crumbled dry wall.

β€œThey found inside one of the bedrooms had been converted into a marijuana grow. Maybe 20 plants, maybe 30,” said Lt. Karen Tenney with the San Diego Police Department.

With a few search warrants served, the victims turned into suspects. Officers confiscated plants and filed a report.

Now the case is in the hands of the District Attorney's office to decide what actions, if any, are taken against the tenants.

As for the driver, the 63-year old Pacific Beach resident was arrested for drunk driving, police said.

β€œHe lives in theneighborhood. This is the way he goes home by turning in the alley maybe being intoxicated he failed to negotiate the turn went through the fence and into the house,” said Lt. Tenney.
