A man was arrested Tuesday after leading police on a chase in Oceanside.

The incident started at 9:15 a.m. when a woman reported someone broke into her car with a sledgehammer at the 24 Hour Fitness on El Camino Real. She was able to give police a license plate number.

Oceanside Police spotted the suspect’s vehicle nearby. They tried to pull over the suspect, but he wouldn’t stop. Police chased him north toward State Route 76.

Officers lost the suspect for a short time, but caught up with him in the 1700 block of Walton Street. According to police, he ran from the vehicle and broke into a home in the neighborhood.

Officials said the woman and children inside escaped unharmed. The suspect came out about a half hour later.

Police took the suspect into custody. They also recovered the missing items from the burglarized car.

Police were looking for a second suspect, but have since called off the search for that man.
