Driver Behind Chicano Park Crash Facing Vehicular Manslaughter, DUI Charges

The driver of the truck that crashed into Chicano Park Saturday afternoon, killing four in a suspected DUI crash, has been identified as an U.S. Navy active duty service member, according to California Highway Patrol officers.

CHP officers identified the driver of the truck as 24-year-old Richard Anthony Sepolio.

According to CHP, Sepolio is an active duty service member with the U.S. Navy, stationed in Coronado.

Sepolio was driving on the onramp of the Coronado Bridge from northbound Interstate 5 just after 3:30 p.m. when he crashed into the guardrail, flew off the bridge and fell approximately 60 feet into Chicano Park, according to officials. At least four people were killed and several more injured, officers say.

Sepolio was arrested on suspicion of DUI and was taken to an area hospital in police custody, where he remains in critical condition.

He has been charged with vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, DUI causing injury or death and other charges related to significant injury of others, officers said.

The Navy is cooperating with law enforcement personnel in the investigation and sends thoughts and prayers to the families of the victims of this horrible tragedy, according to Naval Base Coronado spokesperson Sandy DeMunnik.
