Woman Struck, Killed When Crossing Street in Rancho Penasquitos: PD

A woman was struck and killed by a car when crossing the street Thursday evening in Rancho Penasquitos, San Diego Police (SDPD) said.

The incident happened at approximately 7:31 p.m. near Carmel Mountain Road and Gerana Street when a car crashed into the woman, police said.

According to witnesses, the woman was attempting to cross Carmel Mountain Road when she was hit by a Toyota pick up truck.

Despite Good Samaritan efforts to help the woman, she died on the scene.

Police said the driver of the pick up truck had been going the posted speed limit of 40 miles per hour and was not impaired. The driver did stay on scene.

But some neighbors said more safety precautions are necessary.

"They need to do something with this intersection, whether it's a stop light, a crosswalk, a sign warning these yahoos coming down Carmel Mountain Road that there are pedestrians. They need to do something about it," said neighbor Scott Johnson.

Agustine Fernandez, a friend of the victim, says the woman lived across the street and had been bringing some clothes to her apartment. Fernandez says the victim and her husband were in the process of moving in with her.

Carmel Valley Road was closed while police investigated.

No other information was immediately available.
