Car Knocks Building off Foundation

Residents at a Mission Village apartment building may have to be evacuated after a car rammed into their home.

The accident happened around 3:45 p.m. Sunday in the 3300-block of Daley Center Drive. San Diego Police and Fire-Rescue responded.

Police said an elderly woman accidentally backed her sedan into a corner garage, causing the side of the building to crack.

A structural engineer determined part of the building to be unsafe, according to fire officials. While no evacuations have been ordered, residents have been told not to go into rooms directly above the crack. If the building isn’t repaired soon, they may have to be put up in hotels.

Officials said the car hit an air conditioning unit, but no electrical or gas lines were damaged.

No one, including the driver, was injured. There is no dollar estimate yet for the damage.
